There are two subscription types to Grammarly that you need to know. A free (basic) or premium version. The free version checks for spelling, grammar and punctuation and highlights suggested alternatives. It picks up more subtle errors that may elude the regular spellchecker, like commonly confused words or unnecessary commas. Alternatively, the premium version offers significantly more value. It assesses your writing across correctness, clarity, engagement, delivery and even plagiarism.

Correctness

Correctness focuses on grammar, spelling, and punctuation. It will highlight where a comma (,) should be used or where you’ve accidentally misspelled a word. Additionally, it will pick up words used in the wrong context such as affect or effect.

Clarity

Clarity is regarding the readability and quality of your writing. It cuts out unnecessary words and phrases and identifies where you have used passive voice. It will rephrase wordiness and also suggest a rewrite to make the sentence easier to read.

Engagement

Grammarly offers suggestions to make your writing more interesting to read. You can keep the hiring manager interested by removing bland and overused words. Additionally, boring passages and sentences will be offered suggested changes. You can then keep the hiring manager engaged from the first word to the last.

Delivery

Delivery focuses on how confident your language comes across as well as politeness and formality. It offers suggestions to help ensure your writing comes across exactly as you intend. It will also help you cut certain phrases out and strengthen your language to make sure you get your point across.

Plagirism

Grammarly’s plagiarism checker will compare your writing to billions of web pages, databases, and even academic journals. It is looking to identify any sentences or paragraphs that have been published elsewhere. If you need to use a citation, the plagiarism checker will let you know.

How do I use Grammarly?

Firstly, install Grammarly’s free browser extension as this will help you write online job applications correctly. Secondly, for writing resumes or cover letters you can use Grammarly for Microsoft Office on Windows or Mac. Lastly, there is also Grammarly for Ipad, allowing you to edit your resume, cover letter, or job application from your Ipad.

During my recruitment time, I have seen hundreds (if not thousands) of resumes and cover letters spoiled by poor grammar and spelling. What I can tell you is that first impressions matter. You want to get an employer’s attention for the right reasons. Not because you spelled the job title as “Teaam Leader.” You can rely on Grammarly to ensure that your job applications, cover letters, resumes, and email communications with prospective employers are impactful and mistake-free. At the very least, you will come across as credible and avoid any misunderstandings or misspellings.
